Building Our Communities

The Block family has a long and abiding tradition of supporting the communities in which they operate and the causes in which they strongly believe. This tradition can be traced in part to the senior Mr. Block’s pledge of a hefty amount of money to build a chapel at Hotchkiss School in Connecticut in the 1920s. Though the Great Depression left him without the same resources as when he made the pledge, he not only honored his word, the school asked for additional funds due to increased costs. He donated that, also, though with great difficulty in making both the original pledge and the additional amount.

Block Communications, Inc. companies are generous to the communities where they operate. They have long contributed both talent and treasure, strengthening the very fabric of the communities, making them better places in which to live and raise children.

Several of the Block companies also earmark money for each employee to direct to organizations which do not fall into the above categories but in which the employee has an interest. These include churches, high school plays and bands, and others. The only stipulation is that the employee or a family member be actively involved in the activity. This shows the employee that Block Communications fosters employee involvement with the community in which they live, and shows the recipient that the company supports the activities its employees deem vital.
